MySQL is a free and open-source database management system that uses structured query language (SQL) to access, update, and manage the content of a database. Being open-source makes it a popular choice among software developers, which is why it powers many of today’s most widely used operating systems.

Most modern content management systems (such as WordPress, WoWonder, and PlayTube) rely on MySQL to store their data. Any changes you make within the CMS are saved in the MySQL database, and whenever a visitor accesses the site, the database serves up the relevant content seamlessly.
